The Little Wild

This series is based on items found on my journey between home and art school. There are a mixture of native and introduced plants, and a lot of rubbish.  I treat the things I find as evidence of the site’s natural and cultural identity; it is a marginal place, close to people but untended.

The works have been influenced by the tradition of botanical drawings in the clear fine lines and use of details and cross sections; and by the idea of collecting and cataloguing specimens. I have sought to apply the seemingly impartial spirit of enquiry of scientific illustrations to the objects I’ve found, treating them all as being of equal interest, and seeking commonalities between them, whether in colour or shape. The different objects have all become characterful, and in a way beautiful, by being closely observed and carefully depicted. The manmade objects appear as animate as the natural ones.

Ink, gouache and watercolour on handmade watercolour paper.
